December isn't just about Christmas

Good morning everyone,

Today's weather is looking better and better. We'll see a high of 13C or 14C and mostly sunny skies in the morning. Some clouds will roll in in the afternoon, but the chance of rain is pretty low. The whole week will continue like today-highs in the low teens and a mix of sun and clouds. Not too bad for December weather, I'd say.

Yes, it's December and December means Christmas for the majority of the Western world. However, there are a lot of other 'fun' days in December to enjoy.

Today is 'Rosa Parks Day'.
Have you heard of her? She is known in America as the 'mother of the freedom movement'. In 1955 she was riding the bus and sitting in the 'colored section', when the 'white section' became full, she was asked to give up her seat to a white person but she refused and was arrested. The incident became a symbol of the 'Civil Rights Movement' in America.

December 7th-Write a letter day
write a letter
When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone. A  text or an email doesn't count!  I do it about once a month. It's very therapeutic!  I highly recommend it!

December 8th-Pretend to be a time traveller day
time traveler day
I've never celebrated this one. would you do it?  I  guess you could pretend you were from the past and be amazed at all the high tech stuff you see...or you could pretend to be from the future and be surprised that we are still driving on the ground and not wearing jumpsuits (why does everyone in the future wear jumpsuits-they're not very flattering...ha ha!) Or you could build a time machine...say hi to Michael J. Fox for me, if you can do it!

December 22nd-Haiku Writing Day
That's right!  There's a day for writing haiku. My students are always surprised when I tell them that we learnt about haiku in elementary school. Why is that?  I don't know. But I  do know that we had to write 4 poems (one for each season) in the haiku style.

Are there any other special days in December...hmmm...I can't think of any...ohh!  That's right...there's Christmas Day. I  won't give you the story behind Christmas-it's old news.

But I will say that you shouldn't believe that it is just about giving gifts or celebrating the birth of Christ. It is about spending time with your family (speaking of my family, of course.  I can't speak for everyone's family).
christmas dinner
That's why so many people head home during the Christmas holidays and why I always feel a bit guilty about not going home during Christmas. But I'd go broke if I  went home every year during the Christmas holidays!  It costs an arm and a leg to fly anywhere in Canada that time of year. Just like travelling in Japan during the New Year's holiday...expensive, stressful, but worth it when you get home and see your loved ones.

Have a great day!
