Norovirus

Good morning everyone,

Yesterday was cold, wasn't it? I went out for a 23km run and-for the first time ever-wore my gloves and ear-warmer the whole time! I usually end up taking them off after a few kilometres-not yesterday! Today will be a bit warmer with a high of 9C and then it'll get up to 11C tomorrow and 13C on Friday and Saturday. The week is looking pretty sunny except Saturday, where there is a 50% chance of rain.

So, with all of the news about outbreaks of 'norovirus' in Japan this past week, I thought it'd be a good time to look it up.

And I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that once you've had it-the immunity lasts for between 6 months and 2 years. I suppose that could also count as bad news too, eh? Ha ha! It means you can catch it again and again.

There is no correlation to the virus and winter. The fact that more people get it in winter is because fewer people go outside and we are often crowded together in places where the bug can spread easily. However, as they explained on tv-it all starts from careless food handlers or...and here is the big problem...people who wash their hands with alcohol. That's right!

All of those ads that show people using alcohol based sprays and claiming 99.3% cleanliness won't protect you against the norovirus. Foodhandlers need to clean their hands with soap and water and clean the bathrooms regularly with chlorine-based cleaners to destroy the norovirus.

And norovirus is the most common stomach ailment in the world-it affects 267 million people around the world every year! And it's the cause of around 90% of food illnesses in the world-and around 65% in developed countries.

So, make sure you wash your hands with soap and water and don't trust those alcohol cleaners, of course they help-they're better than nothing, but soap and water is better.

Take care and keep healthy this winter-and if you get the virus, don't worry! It'll just be an uncomfortable 2 or 3 days! It won't kill you! And you have an excuse to take a few days off work! Ha ha!

Have a great day!
