It's Oscar time again!

Good morning eveyrone,

Yesterday turned out to be nicer than I expected. There were even some sunny periods in the day-and it was quite warm, it felt like spring was just around the corner. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, next week will see temperatures fall back down below 10C. Before that, we may see some rain on Sunday as well...

I think it was two years that I was perfect in my Oscar predictions...I forget. Then last year, I was pretty darn close...this year, however, is a very tough year to predict the winners. There are so many great movies and there are a lot of actors who missed out in the past that are 'due' for an award.

Sticking with only the 6 most popular awards (Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director), here are my picks for this year. Just for your info-the awards will be held on March 2nd-Sunday night back in America, so that's Monday here in Japan.

Best Picture
This year there are 9 nominees for this award (they changed the rules to increase the number of films that could be nominated) and it's tough to predict. The top 3 would be Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and American Hustle. I think that people might find 12 Years a Slave a bit preachy and American Hustle about the actors (it's a star-studded cast) so Gravity will be the best compromise.

Best Actor
oscar-matthew mc
I'm going with Matthew McConaughey with this award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. There is a history at the Oscars of choosing an actor who dramatically changes his appearance for a role. And this one shows a very thin McConaughey taking on his most challenging role yet. Chiwetel Ejiofor could be a dark horse candidate for his part in 12 Years a Slave.

Best Actress
oscar-cate blanchett
This is probably the easiest one to pick. Cate Blanchett. Her performance in Blue Jasmine is fantastic! Sandra Bullock was receiving some early mention, but not after Blanchett's showing in Blue Jasmine. Cate Blanchett's performance is that good. If anybody else wins, it'll be a travesty.

Best Supporting Actor
oscar-jared leto
I'm sticking with Dallas Buyers Club for this one. Jared Leto basically plays a man dying of AIDs while in drag (dressed up like a woman). 'Nuff said.

Best Supporting Actress
oscar-jennifer lawrence lupita.jpg
This is the toughest one to pick. I'll go with Lupita Nyong'o in 12 Years a Slave. It's a riveting role in a riveting movie and she gives a riveting performance. Having said that, Jennifer Lawrence is one of those actresses who is 'due' and the Oscar voters may give the nod to her.

Best Director
oscar-alfonso cuaron
I think it'll go to Alfonso Cuaron for his work on Gravity. If you saw it, you could imagine how difficult it would be to pull that together with most of the scenes seeming to be eye-popping action, yet the gripping story of the heroine's battle to get home is never lost in the amazing special effects.

And those are my predictions for this year...what films do you think will win?

Have a great day!
