World Beer and Gourmet Stadium

Good morning everyone,

Did you enjoy your Golden Week? I did, but it's time to get back to work. I guess we'll find out if any of us 'caught' the May Disease while we were away from work, won't we? Ha ha! I don't know about you, but the weather was pretty 'golden'. The skies were blue every day (except for that little bit of rain on Monday morning) and it looks like the sunny weather will continue-at least for a couple more days. It might be a bit too early to think about, but it's looking like the rain will be back in time for those of you who are off on the weekends...I hope you did all of the outdoor activities you wanted to during Golden Week...this upcoming weekend won't be so great for that...

One outdoor activity I did do, was going to the World Beer and Gourmet Stadium. It's on right now at the old Municipal Baseball Stadium grounds and continues till May 11th. Have you been?

It was pretty good, but going actually reminded me why I DIDN'T go to Oktoberfest last year.

First of all, the good points. The weather was great! It was warm without being hot and the place was well organized and clean. There were tons of beers to choose from-there were 9 different beer 'stations' and each one had between 4 and 8 kinds of beer. Oh, and there were plenty of seats and we didn't have to line up very long to get our beer-just a couple of minutes at most. It was great to try some beers that I normally wouldn't have a chance to.

Then there were the 'bad' points. Well, not bad necessarily, but enough to make me think twice about going again. The prices were a bit outrageous-I paid between ¥800 and ¥1000 per glass of beer-and I ordered the smallest size! It wasn't surprising-I went in with my eyes wide open. I knew they would be gouging us, but even was a bit tough to swallow those prices. What else? Ahh...the food. It was ok. Just ok. There wasn't anything even remotely 'gourmet' about it. Unless me and Japan have different definitions of what 'gourmet' means...I don't know about you, but if it's pre-wrapped in Saran Wrap and served on a Styrofoam's probably not gourmet. And if the food is served with a side of ketchup and mustard and a light sprinkling of curry's probably not gourmet...ha ha! We tried a few dishes and none of them were worth the price-none of them were bad per se, but I could have gone to Jojoen for lunch 4 times (ok...maybe 3) with the amount of money I spent on the food there.

Then there was the music...I swear my music class could have done a better job performing! Ha ha! They played songs that were older than my dad! Ha ha! Seriously. They played 'Country Roads', 'The Chicken Song'...I cannot believe they played the Chicken Song. It was terrible, when it came out 30 years ago and it's even worse now! Anyway, they were nice, old men and they were trying hard for it wasn't bad.

Overall, I enjoyed 2 of the 3 glasses of beer I tried. I loved the weather. I was happy that I didn't have to wait long for  my food and drinks, but no...I don't think you'll be able to call me a 'satisfied' repeat customer. And you definitely WON'T find me at Oktoberfest...unless someone else is paying! Ha ha!

Have a great day!
