Don't forget to keep cool!

Good morning everyone,

There's no real change in the weather forecast for the next week. It's going to be over 30C every day and the humidity is going to make it feel even hotter! These are the 'dog days' of summer!

But I refuse to give up on running in the summer! I'm so Canadian! Ha ha! Summer is when we get out and do stuff after having been cooped up inside all winter! So, even though we it doesn't that cold here, I still feel like summer is when I should be doing stuff outside...until I actually step outside and am reminded about how hot it is! Ha ha!

It's hot and that means we sweat a lot more, so you have to keep hydrated!

Last year in Japan 1,076 people died from heat stroke-it's the second highest number ever (2010 with 1,731 deaths was the highest). That is a huge number of preventable deaths. All we need to do is take the proper precautions.

There isn't much I would change about my lifestyle, I'm pretty well hydrated actually-most people say I shouldn't run in the summer However, I'm more worried about the long-term effects of NOT running so I still run, but I'm careful about it. I run less. I run shorter distances. I run slower. And I run as early in the morning as I can.

One of the most important things is to be aware of dehydration. Being dehydrated in the summer is a common occurrence and it can often lead to heatstroke if you don't hydrate yourself! Here are some simple ways to check if you might be dehydrated.

After that-it's simple! Drink water-lots of it. Sure, it's a pain to have to get up and go pee every 5 minutes! Ha ha! But it's better than the alternative...passing out from the heat, being taken to hospital and put on a drip (if you're one of the lucky ones).

I think I'm one of the lucky ones because I like the taste of water. In fact, I find it surprising when some people tell me that they almost never drink just 'plain water'! They always drink tea or coffee or juice or sports drinks. In my fridge, there's a bottle of ice coffee (which has been in there for about a month and is still half full...ha ha!), a can of beer from God knows when and that's all! My fridge is one of those ones that makes ice, so I just drink tap water with a couple of scoops of ice from the fridge. I'm sorry, but I can't even begin to comprehend how it is possible that people don't like water?! Our bodies are 60% water!

So, toss out those expensive sports drinks and flavoured waters and have a glass of nice cold water! You'll love it! And most importantly, your body will thank you!

Have a great day!
