Smart Phone Price Wars

Good morning everyone,

Yesterday was a bit cool and cloudy, but still nice. Today, tomorrow and Monday are all looking sunny and warm. Tuesday and Wednesday may see Typhoon 16 roll in and cause some bad weather. Make sure you keep an eye on it! It might be nothing, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Well, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ were officially released today in Japan and people were lining up to pick up their new phones. I'll probably get one-not because I care about having the newest one but because the battery on my phone needs recharging so often (is it a coincidence that it seems to last exactly as long as my 2-year contract? I don't think so! Ha ha!) Anyway, the other major temptation is the price war that's going on among the three big phone carriers.

I've heard that all of them are basically offering monthly discounts for the two year contract period which basically means the phones are free and now they are offering up to 40,000 yen for your old iPhone (if you join a new provider). So, if that's true, I'll be going to au and asking if that's true and if it is, I might be joining DoCoMo or Softbank.

What I can't figure out is that if all three are offering basically the same discounts and same deals to new customers, why isn't one of them saying they'll offer the same deal to current customers? Why aren't we (the current customer) important? Otherwise, we just change from phone company to phone company every 2 years...well, that's what I'll be doing if they are offering to buy my old phone AND giving me a deal on the new one as well! I'd love to stick with au-they've been good to me, but there is barely any difference between the service they offer so why wouldn't I go for the one that's offering me the best deal?

So, au-do you hear me? Make an offer close to the other companies and I'll stick with you! If not, I'll be gone in a flash!

Don't worry too much though...I'll be back in 2 years! Ha ha!

Have a great day!
