2015 Oscar Predictions

Good morning everyone,

The forecast for today and tomorrow is looking good. It's supposed to be mostly sunny both days with clouds starting to roll in later on Sunday. Both days will see a high of 12C and then it'll get up to 15C on Sunday. Unfortunately, we'll also see some rain on Sunday and then Monday and Tuesday will both be a bit unsettled (for the longest time I've been calling the weather 'unstable' when I really meant to say 'unsettled'...oops! Ha ha!)

Well, it's that time of year again...Oscar Predictions! And I must say that I've been on a roll recently. The last few years, I've predicted the winner of the major categories with a really high rate of success-going 5 out of 6 for the last 3 years!

Let's see how we do this year...

Best Picture
Ok...first up is a pretty tough one to pick actually. I think it's going to come down to either 'Birdman' or 'Boyhood'. Both movies are getting lots of buzz from Hollywood with Birdman coming on strong recently. However, I'm going to go with 'Boyhood'. Not necessarily because I believe it's the better movie, but it has the more original idea (they filmed the movie over a 12 year period) and Oscar voters love to vote for 'new' things.

Best Director
This one has the same problem...it's between 'Birdman' and 'Boyhood'. I think that whichever one wins the 'Best Picture' Oscar, the other one will win Best Director. So, because I'm predicting an Oscar win for 'Boyhood' in the Best Picture category, I'll pick 'Birdman' for Best Director. However, it'll go the other way, if 'Birdman' wins Best Picture.

Best Actor
Eddie Redmayne. Have you ever heard of him? Well, to be honest, neither had I. But most people believe he'll win the Oscar for his performance in 'The Theory of Everything' over more famous actors like Bradley Cooper and Michael Keaton who could sneak in and take this one if people vote based on who they are rather than this specific performance (which happens a lot at the Oscars...name recognition has a lot of value in Hollywood).

Best Actress
Julianne Moore. This is probably the biggest lock of the awards this year. It's the one that I'll be the most surprised about if she doesn't win. Her performance in 'Still Alice' has been talked about non-stop and the other ladies in this category this year are just unlucky because her performance was that much above everyone else's.

Best Supporting Actor
J.K. Simmons. Another guaranteed win from my point of view. He's long been a forgotten man, but his performance in 'Whiplash' was nothing short of spectacular. It's almost worth going to see the movie just for his performance (but it's a good movie too!).

Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette. This is another one I'm pretty confident about. Her performance in 'Boyhood' was very solid and she stole the scene many times as the mother of the titular main character.

Based on my predictions, I, at the very least will go 3 out of 6 (I'm very confident about the last 3 categories), and if I get the Director and Best Picture predictions right (I really believe they could go 50/50 either way) and if Eddie Redmayne steals the Oscar from more household names, I could get it perfect this year!

Now, we just have to wait till Monday morning to find out...

Have a great day!

PS Sorry, but 'The Tale of Princess Kaguya', which is the Japanese entrant in the Best Animated Picture category, has virtually no chance of beating out 'How to Train Your Dragon 2'.
