Good morning everyone,

I heard that it was warmer yesterday than Tuesday, but it sure didn't feel like it to me. Today is supposed to be warmer again with a high of 11C and sunny skies. There is a chance of rain overnight tomorrow but Saturday will be sunny and warm with a high of 13C. Sunday will see rainy/overcast skies and then Monday will be the nicest day of the week with an expected high of 17C. I hope so!

What the heck is a SUD, right? Well, it's an acronym for stand up desk. Desks where you stand up to read or write are all the rage back home. Many studies have shown that sitting all day is bad for you on many, many levels. Some people are calling it the new 'smoking'. (Here in Japan, people still haven't lost their taste for smoking despite the dangers.) What they mean by calling it the new 'smoking' is that it poses not just one, but multiple health risks.

What sitting all day can do to your health.
  • Excessive sitting impacts our body’s metabolic system: “Today, our bodies are breaking down from obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, depression and the many other health ills and everyday malaise that come from what scientists have named sitting disease.”
  • Sedentary lifestyles increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. “For people who sit most of the day, their risk of heart attack is about the same as smoking.” ~ Martha Grogan, Cardiologist, Mayo Clinic
  • Combating sitting disease with added gym-time may not work: most people don’t have time for MORE exercise, and more exercise time may not even reverse sitting disease.
  • Global studies show, on average, we sit 7.7 hours a day, and some results estimate people sit up to 15 hours a day.
I'm definitely one of those people who sits a lot at his job. I always thought I was ok, but I'm pretty active. I ride my bicycle to work every day. I go for a run 3 to 5 times a week. I go for a swim a couple of times a month...but according to a new study, all of that exercise doesn't make up for the fact that I'm sitting on my fat butt all day.

So, I'm seriously considering adding a stand up desk at my school. It'd be more like a 'bar' where classes with one or two students could sit on higher 'bar' stools and I'd stand behind the desk and we'd take a lesson like normal. Of course, I'd still have the regular lesson table for larger classes-and to be honest, I'm also thinking of making them a bit bigger...

These ideas are still in the thought stage, but after reading that report, I'm thinking about them a lot more seriously! Ha ha!
stand up desk

Here's one from Ikea.

How about you? Do you sit all day at your desk? You might want to consider an SUD?

Have a great day!

PS Speaking of Ikea...when the heck is it going to open? I thought it was supposed to open this spring?

What do you think a treadmill desk? I saw it on the CBC news, the title was 'Best Foot Forward'. "Working at the treadmill desk at the workstation is be able to find action and help people think better than sitting all day." "Sitting is in a sleep mode. And, what it means is that workers can create innovation and it makes them increase activity while walking."said some users. I tend to sit all day long and my memory is getting worse. I am thinking to buy one seriously!
