Samurai Scissors

Good morning everyone,

This weekend is going to be gorgeous! Both today and tomorrow are expected to get up to 27C or 28C and the whole week is looking sunny with highs from Monday only slightly lower-around 25C or so. It's shaping up like a gorgeous beginning to October.

If you’re anything like me, you spend a more than healthy amount of time day-dreaming about cutting down enemies with a katana. Not that I really have any enemies or even people I’d glare at on the streetcar. Heck, we’re pretty peaceful, loving folks here in Hiroshima! But that doesn’t change the fact that Japanese swords are awesome!
Still, there are not many chances to walk around with a sword strapped to your hip these days.

Fortunately, Nikken Cutlery has found the perfect compromise: scissors inspired by the swords of Oda Nobunaga and other samurai!

Just because you can’t wear a sword to work doesn’t mean you can’t at least add a samurai flair to your office with these katana scissors. Nikken Cutlery has actually made a few different types of katana scissors for your cutting needs, including the ones inspired by Oda Nobunaga’s sword Heshikiri-hasebe and featuring a gold-tipped “scabbard” pictured above.

The scissor blades are made of stainless steel and the handles are covered in lacquered tsukamaki, making for perhaps the prettiest pair of scissors I’ve ever seen! Of course, cutting instruments this gorgeous don’t come cheap, and a pair will put you back Y12,000, but isn’t that worth it for such a cool-looking pair of scissors?! And you have a little time to save up your yen—these scissors won’t be available until October 21.

▼ The screw also bears Oda Nobunaga’s family crest.

And in case you don’t want to keep your expensive new tools locked up in a wooden box, Nikken Cutlery also offers a stand for another Y400.

In addition to the Oda Nobunaga version, Nikken Cutlery has other samurai-sword-inspired scissors. Unfortunately, these haven’t been given a release date or a price yet, but I can’t imagine they’ll be cheap. Surprisingly, these ones will be called the 'Golden Dragon', I have no idea why...ha ha!

There’s also a set of colorful katana scissors that are more reasonably priced and available via Amazon Japan for between Y1,900 and Y2,700.

▼ They’re not as flashy, but they’ll work just as well!

But most importantly,  now you have something to pair with your samurai armor bottle covers! If you're not sure what I'm talking about here, you should read my blog more often! Ha ha!

Have a great day!
