Really, really cold noodles

Good morning everyone,

If you haven't already worked it out...yeah, it's going to rain today. It may stop raining later this afternoon, but it'll be overcast with a 40% chance of rain tomorrow and Tuesday. We may see some sun on Wednesday (or not) before the rain begins again on Thursday. Temperatures will continue to remain around 30C.

Sometimes there are restaurants that go that extra mile to really stand out and this is definitely one of them.

Located by the river in the famous Arashiyama region of Kyoto is Tempura Matsu, a beautiful, traditional building where some of the finest dishes in Japan are served. One of the most stunning items on the menu are the noodle dishes, which vary from season to season, and diners are so impressed with their meals they’ve been sharing photos of their amazing dishes online.

The inaniwa udon, made from mugwort and served with wasabi and a raw egg yolk, are a hit with diners, both for their delicious flavour and their visually stunning bowls. Homemade Japanese mugwort noodles that were the perfect texture. Noodles were in dashi broth and accompanied by wasabi and a raw egg yolk. Presentation of this dish was even better, in an ice cube block!

Made from a huge block of ice, the tiny scooped out bowl at the top helps to impart the noodle broth with a small amount of icy water as it slowly melts.

Seasonal flavours are an important element of Japanese cooking, and Tempura Matsu doesn’t disappoint, with sakura cherry blossom noodles in spring.

While everyone is blown away by the cold noodles, the restaurant serves up a host of other amazing theatrical specialities like smoked buri…

I don't know about you, but when I think of eating food in the summer-those are the sort of dishes I had in if there was only some way I could enjoy that kind of gorgeous food without having to go all the way to Kyoto...

Have a great day!
