Battle of the Bulge

Good morning everyone,

It was a really nice day yesterday, wasn't it? And today is looking pretty much the same. You'd better enjoy it, while you can. It's supposed to rain this weekend and then temperatures are going to plummet from Monday. Overnight lows next week will be under 15C and daytime highs in the low to mid 20s.

Convenience stores in Japan are just a bit too convenient for me. As a guy who grew up in the countryside, I think it's hard for me to get used to convenience stores. When I was a kid, going to the local convenience store was a treat. There was one about 5-6km away from our house, but it was on the opposite side of the highway so I wasn't allowed to go alone. My brothers and I went a few times a summer. It was a bit of a trek by bicycle when I was just a kid.

So, whenever I went, I made sure I got a lot of treats. I'd always buy a soft drink-usually cream soda, but I'd get root beer every now and then too. Then I'd get a bag of potato chips-sour cream and onion were my favorite by far! And I'd get a chocolate bar too-it's impossible to pick a favorite chocolate bar-I'd eat any of them! If I think back to the ones I remember most from my childhood though, they'd be flavors like Coffee Crisp, Crispy Crunch, Aero or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

Now that I'm living in Japan, there seems to be a convenience store on every corner-which is great-I'm not complaining! But it's hard for me to change my thinking that when I go to the convenience store, I have to pick up 2 or 3 things-even though I can easily go anytime.

That means I can blame Japan's overly convenient convenience stores as the reason I can't win the battle of the bulge, right? I haven't lost yet, though. I had my health check last week and was 5cm below the 'metabolic syndrome' line for waist measurement. I don't know about my BMI though...I'm always at the top end of the healthy range...hopefully, I didn't go over this time...(because of 7/11...ha ha!)

Yesterday though, I finally broke through! I went to Poplar (another one of those dangerous convenience stores) and only bought the one thing I had gone in for! Can I make a habit out of it?'ll be good for my wallet too...

How about you? Can you just pop into the convenience store and pick up the one thing you went in for? Or, are you like me and always end up getting one or two other things as well?

Have a great day!
