TOEIC Test-here I come!
Good morning everyone,
Well, big change in the forecast. We've gone from what was supposed to be a pretty good weekend weather-wise, to a pretty crappy one. Overnight, the weather for today changed from mostly sunny to cloudy with a 50% chance of rain in the evening. Basically, if you plan on being out after 6, you'd better pack your umbrella! The same thing goes for tomorrow morning. It'll rain overnight and through tomorrow morning. The rain will stop in the afternoon, but it'll be cloudy all day. The good news for me is that it's going to be a fine day on Tuesday-the bad news is that I'll spend the day at the licence office renewing my driver's licence...ha ha! Oh well, you can't win them all...
Yesterday morning I took the practice test for TOEIC just to get a feel for it and so there wouldn't be any surprises next Sunday when I took the thing for real. I learned a couple of things I will have to be careful about.
One, the listening section pace is really slow for me. I'll have to really concentrate on not getting bored or distracted and starting to daydream. Don't get me wrong-the speaking is at native speed, but the time between instructions, the reading and the questions is too long for me. Students, on the other hand, should be using that time to review the questions for the upcoming listening!!
Two, the advice about stopping reading while they are speaking is good advice. You should give the listening your full attention. I even closed my eyes during the reading to help myself concentrate.
Three, I am definitely an 'about' kind of person when it comes to details. There were a couple of questions asking about specific details in section 3 of the listening where I had forgotten the answer. I'm definitely going to have to concentrate more during this section on remembering the details.
Speaking of listening, it was only Part 3 that gave me any trouble-mostly because of what I mentioned above about asking for details.
I'm also going to have to be wary of getting overconfident and rushing through the test. I finished the Reading Section of the test in just over half an hour! Ha ha! What am I going to do for the last hour!?
I won't tell you what score I got because I have a couple of side bets with people and I don't want them to get too up or down on their chances-the tables are still open for more betting! Does anyone want to use 'beating the sensei' as an extra motivator? Ha ha! Like I mentioned yesterday, I'm happy to give you a handicap...
